Statement on the End of Immigration Court Proceedings for U.S. Citizen Dulce
Today, President of Sanabria & Associates, Gunther Sanabria, released the following statement regarding the end of immigration court proceedings for U.S. Citizen Dulce
On May 27, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security filed a request for dismissal before the Executive Office of Immigration Review in the removal proceedings against our natural-born USC client, Dulce Consuelo Diaz Morales. In so doing, the Department would not agree or resolve any factual matters, such as the truth of Dulce’s birth and the reality of the harsh treatment of her these past six months.
This has vindicated our many assertions that the government had the power to stop this cycle of violence at any time. Still, as we have also repeatedly mentioned, Dulce’s freedom has an asterisk attached. Given that the government only agreed to closing Dulce’s case “without prejudice” it indicates they maintain the position that they can resume these proceedings against her at any time.
On June 1, 2026, Dulce received her US passport. This is the most definitive proof that she, or indeed anyone, can produce to show the reality of their citizenship. And yet, this document is only verification of the truth. She was a citizen before receiving the passport, and she will remain a citizen thereafter.
We, like many other advocacy groups and legal service providers, drastically fear the erosion of rights and safety under the current policy regime. To all those that fear and reject a “show your papers” society, Dulce and her ongoing saga should properly be seen as a shot across the bow. This case has loudly proven that you are only legal until the government says otherwise. We continue to advocate for due process for all immigrants and citizens alike.
